1918 - Demise and new beginning
World War I was the fundamental catastrophe of the 20th century, where technical warfare, weapons of mass destruction, but also nationalism and racial fanaticism came to a first climax. Many musicians and composers were directly affacted by the war, they had to serve as soldiers, like Fritz Kreisler or Hans Gál, were wounded or killed. Some had to emigrate, others took profit from arousing nationalism, that condemned the foreign and only allowed what was own.
The end of the war 100 years ago led to the collapse of the Austrian-Hungarian Empire, but also awoke hopefor a better, peaceful and democratic future.
