Gerhard Waiz, born in Vienna, studied cello at the Konservatorium der Stadt Wien with Cecilia Ottensamer and received his concert diploma at the early age of 19. Afterwards he studied and attended masterclasses with Prof. Franz Bartolomey (Vienna Philharmonic).
He soon performed as a soloist and with chamber music and won prizes in several competi-tions. He made recordings for TV, Radio and CD (e.g. with Ensemble classico and the Konzertensemble Wiener Flair) and played concerts all over Europe, in Turkey, Japan, Korea, Mexico, Brazil, Guatemala, Canada and the USA.
He also played in the Orchestra of the Vienna State Opera and the RSO Vienna, and Principal cello in the Swiss Ensemble classico. His repertoire is widespread and contents all periods from Baroque to the 20 century. Due to his special interest in contemporary music, he regularly performs new works for cello, some of them dedicated to him. During the last years he successfully started writing solo-pieces for his instrument. Since 2010 he is teaching at the Beethoven-Music school in the city of Mödling. And he is writing literature, too, and published his first collection of poetry, die beine der schöneren lügen, in 2012.
